Revisit and Revive the Old

_DSC9749

Need something to do but want to be productive?  Revisit your old files and take a fresh look at them.  Perhaps you missed an interesting image or, it just wasn’t edited right. Here are three images that I shot in 2012 back in Kansas, where I grew up.  _DSC9612 This one I particularly like.  I missed originally that it was sitting in a pocket of light shining through the trees.  Once I started working on the file I also saw the subtle pink and magenta tone sitting in the low laying clouds.  _DSC9604I was stoked.  I’ve shot thousands of images from Kansas over the years and many views get a repeated look.  Different times of the year, different times of the day.  You never know where that special light will occur, or if it’s already in your images.  Revisit….

GO ON VACATION…… SERIOUSLY!!!

I have a phobia of losing clients by going on vacation.  So I try and be the good communicator and notify my clients of upcoming trips and vacations so they don’t (hopefully) schedule or plan anything during that time frame.  This way clients know and I have a few days to pack or relax before heading to the airport.

WRONG…. I don’t know if it’s the law of attraction but 90% of the time I end up  shooting during the week and finishing the post production just before the early morning trip to the airport.  I end up catching up on my sleep on the flight to our destination.

The last time I failed to send out my obligatory email was when my father died and I flew back to Kansas.  My primary client at the time called me the day of the funeral and asked if I could do a major rebranding shoot in two days.  No, I replied my father just passed away, can we reschedule the shoot for a week later.  No they replied.  That week I lost two very important parts of my life.  One can’t be replaced.

btw, I’m going on vacation next Sat. and I sent “the email”.  I’m shooting for four days, doing one day of post production and then off to New Orleans.  I hope your thoughts of vacation are as productive.

On The Road…Again

I’m no expert but it appears the economy is improving.  The first two months of 2014 were the busiest I’ve ever had.  I know it’s a small sample to base the year on but other photographers have told me they’re off to a good start also.  If photographers are working, businesses are marketing and looking to growth.  That’s what we do, we help our client market, sell and grow their business.

I spent a lot of the month on the road.  Several trips to Orange County surrounded a couple San Diego projects and then I went to the Bay Area for a couple shoots up there.  After a quick respite back home and starting a new local project, I went to Alaska for a quick shoot.  I know, why send a San Diego photographer there, it’s because my client trusts me to get what they need.  Maybe an idea for a future blog.

Well I need to wrap this up.  I have another couple projects in Orange County and LA this week.  I hope everyone else is busy.

When building your Brand do it Right

I was recently hired to help create new images for Holland Cycles of Alpine, Ca.   For Bill Holland, a master cycle builder, this was a big investment to make his mark on the cycling world with a new website presence.  These titanium and carbon fiber bikes are not cheap.  They are custom hand built to the specs of their future owner/rider at a cost of about $10 – 20K.  My job was to show the beauty of the process and help create the perception of the artistry in the detail.  The challenge became a great project to achieve our goals and enjoy the process of the studio shoot.  Robert Bingham who made his impact on the internet, a former creative director and avid cycle rider himself was chosen to head the project.    The decision was made to do most of the shooting in the studio showing the elegance of the craftsmanship, design and the quality of the materials artistically through the use of our lighting featuring multiple softboxes, grids on one “detail” light and reflectors to kick light back into the shadows.

Normally I do all my post production work but this time we brought in digital artist Holly Nelson-Kramer of Spitting Images to refine our main “beauty shots”.  When you want it right, go to the experts.  Bob and Bill were both pleased with the results and now Bill has a strong website presence to showcase the work they do.   An investment in the photography will now benefit his business image.

Techy stuff:  primarily shot with a Nikon D3 & D700 using a combination of 60 2.8 macro, 24 – 70 and 70 – 200 lenses.  We use a mix of Profoto and Q flashes in the various softboxes.  Images were initially processed through Adobe Lightroom 3 and then the beauty selects were enhanced by Holly.  Holland’s Cycle website:  http://www.hollandcycles.com/  For more or my work check out http://www.zwink.com

Melding of the Souls

Melding of the Souls
Melding of the Souls

I was introduced to Ashley by my talented photographer friend, Heather Fuqua.  Heather had asked me to show her some location lighting techniques and said she would provide the talent.  My original plan was just to introduce her to some directional lighting using a couple Quantum Q flashes and Pocket Wizard remotes.  The day was overcast, the alley in North Park grimmy.  After watching the interaction of Ashley and Heather, I finally accepted the offer to join in the shoot.  Ashley was a very strong dancer and was able to easily collaborate with us and react to the adjustments we often requested.  Due to the flat lighting I used the lighting to help create strong lighting patterns to accentuate Ashley’s movement among the alleyway.  The lighting also allowed me to pull out the emotional interaction and strength in the post production process using a combination of increased saturation and hi pass effects.

This image was chosen as part of the Harbor Arts exhibition which opened this past Saturday evening in San Diego’s North Park at J&T Architecture Gallery.  I’ve entered very few images in competitions the past few years, partially a result of not taking my work seriously enough.  After reviewing a portion of my existing work and with the encouragement of my friends I hope to make more of an effort in the future.  Photography is meant to be shared, discussed, learned from and enjoyed.  It’s time for me to start sharing.
